Review: Mission Rock Resort — Brunch

December 20, 2015 by Angie Sommer 1 Comment

Hello world! We’ve been dormant for the summer (pretend like that’s a thing) here at B&C, but we’re trying to come crawling out of our shell for winter. I thought I’d ease us back in with a re-review that simply confirms that Mission Rock Resort in Potrero Hill is still awesome and amazing and makes my weekends happy and joyous.

Review: Mission Rock Resort — Brunch

June 5, 2015 by Angie Sommer 3 Comments

Ah, brunch. I hate being on bandwagons, but I’m totally on the brunch wagon. It’s such a wonderful feeling to enjoy your first meal of the day in a leisurely fashion while not having to do any actual work. SF is full of incredible brunch places, but I’ve found one where the food is great, there’s not usually a wait, and you can park your car (gasp).

Mission Rock Resort is a bit out in the boonies—bayside in Potrero Hill—but totally worth the trip. It’s huge and has a large outdoor patio that is amazing on a nice day. The food is awesome, the service is great, and the prices don’t break the bank. I know, it’s not Plow or Boogaloos or Zazie, but you can park out front, you don’t have to wait over an hour, and you can actually look out on the bay while you eat. And now for the food….

I went to Sens again for lunch last week, and it was delicious as always! Thought I’d share a few more photos:

Review: Pier 23

October 6, 2014 by Angie Sommer 1 Comment

Let me tell you why I love Pier 23. The food is decent, the cocktails are mediocre, and the service can be sporadic. Ok, those are not reasons I love Pier 23, but I keep going because it’s such a cool place despite all these things.

Pier 23 is one of those places in a big city that feels like is has history. It’s got an old-fashioned, super casual vibe to it, but it’s popping with patrons young and old, so it still feels alive and fun. It’s small and oddly-placed along the vast waterfront full of cavernous, mysterious pier buildings — a welcoming oasis along this often inaccessible-seeming stretch….

Review: Hog Island Oyster Co. — Marshall, CA

June 23, 2014 by Angie Sommer Leave a Comment

This weekend we took a trip up to Point Reyes for some hiking, some eating, and some general out-of-the-city time. It was awesome. The weather was mostly beautiful (save the extreme wind conditions on half our Saturday hike), and some of the food was spectacular. I’ll do another post for our experience at Sir and Star, but wanted to quickly recap the fun stop we made at Hog Island Oyster Co. on our way out.

Having been to the Hog Island in the Ferry Building in SF a number of times (omg, try the clam chowder; it’s out of this world), I was keen to see what their home base was like. Directly bordering the east side of Tomales bay on Highway 1 is a tiny town called Marshall which houses a number of oyster farms and retailers. Oysters are the “thing” on this stretch of land, as they are harvested right there in the shallow waters of Tomales Bay. And while I’ve never been an oyster person, I wanted to see what it was about.

Review: Park Chow — Brunch

June 6, 2014 by Angie Sommer 1 Comment

If I were filling out a review of Park Chow on Opentable, I would check the box for “neighborhood gem”. And then I’d feel like that was super cheesy and uncheck it. Then I’d remember that it’s hecka accurate and check it again.

Review: Hillstone

March 2, 2014 by Angie Sommer 4 Comments

I’ve done this before, and I’m sure I’ll do it again. A few weeks ago, I found myself wandering about the Embarcadero in search of food around 3pm. I wanted to see the newly remodeled Fog City Diner, so, starved, we walked down to their location across from Pier 23. For some unknown and seemingly unnecessary reason, they do not serve food between 2.30 and 4.30pm. I find that this happens to me on vacation a lot — arriving at a restaurant “between meals”. So irritating.

Review: Gott’s Roadside

November 2, 2013 by Angie Sommer 1 Comment

My only and recurring experience of Gott’s is as a lunch treat with one of my favorite co-workers. A mid-day haven from the monotony of office life, we occasionally escape to the Ferry Building to share an overly-filling, calorie-laden, sun-bathed lunch together. We talk about work, friends, his upcoming wedding, river rafting, and more. We sit outside, in their designated area of picnic tables, and enjoy our “slow” food in the sun. It’s excellent.

Review: The Plant

June 21, 2012 by Angie Sommer 2 Comments

It’s so sad to me when people hear the names of restaurants like Plant and say something like, “Ugh, does that mean there’s nothing good on the menu?” When did plants become bad to eat? Why do meat eaters have to eat meat with every meal ever? I digress (and kinda apologize; you do what you want).

Plant is not a vegetarian restaurant. It is sorta healthy-ish, doesn’t have anything deep fried, and doesn’t have meat other than seafood and poultry. In fact, their website tells me they serve: all organic produce, all free range poultry, and sustainable seafood. Sounds good to me. And yes, they do have many meat-less dishes and some veggie-adventurous items (tempeh, anyone?). And it’s great! I love this place.

Review: Lake Chalet

August 7, 2011 by Angie Sommer 2 Comments

Atmosphere: 4/5   ♦   Service: 4/5   ♦   Food Quality: 4/5   ♦   Value:3/5
Times Visited: A Few  ♦   Will I Return?:  Yes!

Happy Birthday to me… this is where I chose to spend my birthday this year with my family. Where’s a nice place that’s close to Hayward (my fam lives in Hayward), not too terribly expensive (I’m not that kind of birthday girl) and has food that all four of my super picky fams will enjoy (sorry guys, you know it’s kinda true)? The Lake Chalet.

For Mom: Lake Chalet is classy and upscale with nice views of the lake and outdoor seating. For Dad: It’s got a “normal” seafood/steak menu with things that are just short of the “art food” he so dreads. For Sister: The bar is nice and serves cutesy drinks, and the delicious-sounding choices on the menu make it difficult for her to choose though she’ll probably be happy with whatever she gets.

And for me: it’s a nice place with good service and good food. There. Birthday done….
