This super-cute, San Francisco-worthy restaurant can be found serving up gourmet grilled cheese every day of the week just next to South Park at 2nd Street in SOMA. When a friend of mine first heard that I was going to be working in SOMA and that I’m a veggo, he promptly took me to The American. And for that, I am grateful.

The American is in a cute homey place with framed photos adorning the walls, lots of counter stools, and outdoor seating. They specialize in grilled cheese and make ’em better than mom used to (sorry mom, but they’ve got Gruyère cheese, you know?). I love specialty shops like this that serve one thing and serve it with pizazz. And I love the word pizazz, just to let you know….

Review: Fish.

Fish, period. That’s what they call themselves, punctuation and all. And what’s not to like about Fish.? Unless you’re a true vegetarian. Or you’re allergic to seafood. Or you just don’t like fish.

But I suffer from none of those deterrents, so I liked my fish at Fish. This place is way out of the way for most East Bay folks, nestled into the harbor-y area in the north part of Sausalito, but people around those parts seem to flock to Fish. We happened to be over there with Boyfriend’s mom and were looking for a good place to dine — we were happy to find one.

Fish has mostly… fish. As you might imagine. And they tout the sustainability thing too, which is refreshing. A large signboard in their dining area describes the virtue of sustainability in fishing and their website mentions that they only receive their salmon from “wild, sustainable sources” and never buy farmed fish. And they do use the word “poop” as a reason why farmed fish are bad — kudos to them for that. It takes balls to talk about poo.

cafe biereCafe Biere is a great little place on Adeline Street in Emeryville. While a little out of the way for us Hayward-ites, it’s a fun little dinner and drinks place if you happen to be enjoying a night out at Ikea or…whatever else is in Emeryville.

Mostly a beer pub (that is pretty serious about their beer selection, mind you), this place also classes it up with home made sangria and a pretty substantial menu of fun foods. And by “fun”, I don’t mean typical “bar” foods. While they do offer a tantalizing variety of fried foods (beer battered mushrooms, fried calamari, sweet potato fries, regular fries, chicken fingers and fish ‘n chips), they also serve starters like mussels, spiced nuts, a cheese plate, roasted beet salad and potato cheese balls. …
