Review: Super Duper Burger

January 23, 2014 by Angie Sommer 5 Comments

Fast food is not what it used to be.

Ok, that’s not entirely true. McDonald’s and Taco Bell (et al.) still suck, unless you enjoy uncontrollable diarrhea. Which I do not. But Super Duper is in a new category. A category of food that I may decide to eat, like, willingly.

There are two downtown/SOMA locations, and one in the Castro. I’ve passed by more than once and noticed that they have a veggie burger on their menu. As I am on an unofficial quest to find the best veggie burger in SF, I was curious. The other night, I ventured in, alone, to experience another contender.

Review: Fondue Cowboy

December 17, 2013 by Angie Sommer 3 Comments

First, a confession.

I suggested Fondue Cowboy for my sister’s birthday dinner this year, which was met with extreme excitement from said sibling. I subsequently re-though my decision and indicated that Town Hall would be a more appropriately fancy birthday location. And it was; the food was delicious and all was well. But, then I betrayed my teeny tiny sister and went to the Cowboy with other friends. Like a jerk!

Can we just say that I did the appropriate research that now allows me to confidently take my sister to this facility? I mean, I don’t want to waste her time in traveling all the way to The City for a crap meal. Now we can be certain of a good time, and of good food. Sister, will you join me at the Cowboy for some fondue?

Review: Little Vine

November 25, 2013 by Angie Sommer 3 Comments

In North Beach we have all kinds of shops and restaurants in which you can peruse, nosh, imbibe, and otherwise enjoy yourself. Little Vine is a little gem of a shop on Grant between Union and Filbert that sells wine, cheese, and other specialty foods. It’s not a restaurant, except that it does serve a daily sandwich (on Acme bread, which they also sell!), but I liked it so much, I wanted to blog about it anyway.

Review: Caffe Baonecci

November 17, 2013 by Angie Sommer 1 Comment

North Beach is San Francisco’s “Little Italy”. As such, you’re never more than a stone’s throw from an Italian restaurant in these parts. Most of them, as far as I’ve experienced, are relatively mediocre, as you might expect in a tourist-oriented area with an overabundance of one type of restaurant. Caffe Baonecci is a nice change of pace.

Review: Gott’s Roadside

November 2, 2013 by Angie Sommer 1 Comment

My only and recurring experience of Gott’s is as a lunch treat with one of my favorite co-workers. A mid-day haven from the monotony of office life, we occasionally escape to the Ferry Building to share an overly-filling, calorie-laden, sun-bathed lunch together. We talk about work, friends, his upcoming wedding, river rafting, and more. We sit outside, in their designated area of picnic tables, and enjoy our “slow” food in the sun. It’s excellent.

Review: Caffe DeLucchi — Breakfast

October 16, 2013 by Angie Sommer 1 Comment

If you happen to be awake and ready to head to a nice breakfast before 9am on a weekend in North Beach, prepare to see a whole lot of “closed” signs, probably a bit of vomit on the sidewalk, and droves of Chinese ladies exercising in the park. Because apparently that’s all that’s happening in the mornings in North Beach — we’re a late night neighborhood.

Review: La Urbana

October 2, 2013 by Angie Sommer 4 Comments

La Urbana is the newest schmancy Mexican joint to open up in SF — it’s on Divis and Grove, right next to Bar Crudo and a skip away from Nopa. A friend of mine heard the buzz and made a reservation, and I was happy to check it out.

The space is really cool. It’s open and bright and sufficiently posh for upscale SF dining. It’s pretty loud, however, and toward the end of our meal, we were struggling to hear each other. Now, regarding everything else, apparently Eater SF has already got it covered. Though their article really does just quote Yelp reviews… so I’m going to one-up them and do my own drawn-out Yelp review on something called a blog. Read on!

Review: Bar Tartine

September 20, 2013 by Angie Sommer Leave a Comment

I finally went to Bar Tartine last night. It was good, but honestly, not as good as I expected. I kinda hate it when that happens.

Bar Tartine is owned by the same chefs who own Tartine, the famous bakery. I actually still have never been to the bakery (pretend like the Mission district is a far-away foreign land to a North Beach resident), though I have enjoyed their chocolate croissants courtesy of my co-worker. The chocolate croissants are amazing, btw. Anyway, Bar Tartine is a dinner restaurant that also doubles as a sandwich shop in the afternoons. It’s modern and chic and widely hailed as awesome.

Review: Machka

September 2, 2013 by Angie Sommer Leave a Comment

Update: This restaurant has closed. 🙁

Machka! It just sounds like it should be an exclamation to me. Not sure why that is. Machka is a small Mediterranean* restaurant in the FiDi** right across the street from the Pyramid Building. It has just a handful of tables in the narrow, brick-lined space, and a bar in one corner that serves wine and beer. Mom and sis took me here for lunch on my actual birthday (I was at work; it was awesome).

Review: Maverick

August 25, 2013 by Angie Sommer Leave a Comment

This year, Maverick was my choice for my 31st birthday dinner with my man-friend. Actually, Outerlands was going to be my birthday dinner choice, but we found out last minute that they were closed for the 4th of July (man-friend was going out of town on my actual b-day; this was my pre-bday dinner) and that our OpenTable reservation was a sham. A sham!

Anger from that incident aside, Maverick was a suitable replacement. It’s a teeny little contemporary American restaurant in the Mission District. And though it doesn’t fit in with the roving crack-heads, plentiful hipster bars, and relentless dollar taquerias that plague the Mission, it is still totally worth making the trek for. It’s even worth ending a sentence in a preposition for.
