Storytime: The Nature Stop & How to Be a Pimp

August 14, 2013 by Angie Sommer Leave a Comment

I have taken to pimping out the natural foods store near my house. Literally.

—

berryIt’s a Thursday evening. I stand outside the natural food store near my house. I hold in my hands a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables which I purchased at said store. They’re fresher than what you can get from the farmer’s market. They’re as delicious as anything you could grow in your own home. Can you grow them? No, you live in San Francisco. So you’re looking at me.

A man walks by on the sidewalk. I hold out a basket of strawberries. He glances at them, then looks at me, never breaking his stride. I wink menacingly. He breaks eye contact and hurries on. It was obvious he wanted them though. He’ll be back.

A young woman strides by in yoga pants and a baggy, gray knitted sweater. She has a gym bag. She’s wearing sunglasses even though the sun’s almost set and it’s cloudy and cold. I whip out two cobs of fresh, sweet, white corn. I thrust them toward her. She dodges, frowns. She’s obviously not in the mood tonight; I move on.

I’ve moved to the corner. I hold my wares in plain sight: two oranges, the corn, the strawberries, a bunch of kale, and four avocados. A car slows as it passes. “You lookin’ for a nice meal?”, I ask. The passenger and driver exchange a glance. “How much?”

Review: Don Pisto’s

July 27, 2013 by Angie Sommer 1 Comment

Don Pisto’s, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

Yes, this is brunch. You want to eat it.

Yes, this is brunch. You want to eat it.

Don Pisto’s is quite literally the closest restaurant to my house. It’s a block away. It’s hard to ask for a better restaurant to be so close to, honestly. Indeed, let me count the ways:

Review: Pacific Catch

July 7, 2013 by Angie Sommer Leave a Comment

If you find yourself in the Inner Sunset district, I hope you brought a jacket. And a good mood. Because it’s undoubtedly cloudy, possibly misty, and at least 20 degrees colder than the rest of the City. Welcome to the dreary side of the City.

Teeny complimentary appetizer -- so cute!

Teeny complimentary appetizer — so cute!

They do have food over here, however — apparently people here need to eat too. There are a few names that come up time and again if you ask around for what’s good in the Sunset, and Pacific Catch is one of them. I tried it. It was good.

Review: Kokkari

June 23, 2013 by Angie Sommer Leave a Comment

Kokkari is a Greek restaurant downtown (fine, Jackson Square if you want to be super pretentious/specific). It’s hard to get into, which is why I have not been to date. Not, like, State Bird Provisions hard, but just like regular, really good SF hard. However, lunch is not quite as in demand. And our boss took us there last week. Booya.

Review: Wine Kitchen

June 9, 2013 by Angie Sommer 1 Comment

This is going to be a weird post.

Basically, these food photos turned out relatively amazing. So this place looks amazing. And the food was really good, but the decor and general ambiance of Wine Kitchen irked me in a weird way. And since I was with my architect friend, she easily told me Eight Things that Wine Kitchen Could Do to Improve Their Vibe. And, while I would not have noticed them myself, she was right.

But first, food:

Review: Burma Superstar

June 4, 2013 by Angie Sommer Leave a Comment

Ok. Everyone has already said everything there is to say about Burma Superstar. The blogosphere is chock-full of immense praise and a billion photos and detailed descriptions of everything about BS. Although people probably don’t commonly call it BS. Regardless, I’ll keep this short.

Burma Superstar is a Burmese restaurant in the Richmond. They do not take reservations. The decor is not particularly intriguing. But somehow it’s still posh as shit.

Review: Dante’s Weird Fish

May 27, 2013 by Angie Sommer 2 Comments

I was looking for a place in the Mission to have dinner before a friend’s bday party. Criteria: not Mexican food, not too expensive, not a huge wait, good food. Somehow, Dante’s managed to hit all these points. Apparently Yelp isn’t just a place for people to complain about trivial things.

Dante’s was great. Apparently it used to be called “Weird Fish”. It closed, and re-opened as “Dante’s Weird Fish”. Per this article, they added the word “Dante’s”, and took some crap off the walls. Otherwise, it’s reportedly the same.

Me 'n Dante.

Review: Brenda’s

May 5, 2013 by Angie Sommer 3 Comments

Hello world! I am back. After a brief hiatus to take some dumb engineering test, and then some subsequent rest to do things like see the sunshine, remind friends that I exist, and generally sit doing nothing at all, I am ready to bloggulate again. Let’s kick this biatch off with Brenda’s.

Beignets

Brenda’s Beignets

Brenda’s French Soul Food is in the TL. That’s SF-speak for the Tenderloin. Which is the filth-ridden, junkie-laden, pristinely located neighborhood right in the middle of the city between all the other neighborhoods you like (ex: downtown, Hayes Valley, Nob Hill, etc.). The Tenderloin is like San Francisco’s booby trap for visitors who stumble into the area accidentally, and just a puss-filled blemish on the landscape that natives avoid most of the time….

Review: Capo’s

February 26, 2013 by Angie Sommer 4 Comments

Extra, Extra, ReadAllAboutIt! Capo’s Now Open in North Beach!

Say that in, like, one of those Dick Tracy Chicago gangster accents to get the full gist of what’s happening in that sentence, y’shee. Capo’s is the newest gig from world champion pizza tosser Tony Gemignani of Tony’s Pizza Napolitana, one of the famous SF pizza joints (also the owner of Pyzano’s in Castro Valley). This time he’s gone old school with Capo’s — red patent leather booths, brick walls, and mood lighting chandeliers. And a specialization in Chicago-style deep dish pizza. I can dig it.

Review: Chaya

February 18, 2013 by Angie Sommer 5 Comments

Behold: Chaya.

The awesome thing about having a food blog in SF is that it’s no longer necessary to write bad reviews of restaurants. There’s just too much good stuff here to waste time on sub-par food. Chaya is one of the best places I’ve been in a while.

???????????????????????????????

It’s mom’s birthday. More than a pony, she wants a nice meal at an upscale restaurant — preferably with a view of the water — and a fun night with her daughters. Choosing a restaurant is always difficult, but we settled on Chaya, though none of us had been there before.

Chaya is on Embarcadero across the street and a bit south from the Ferry Building. It has large windows that look directly out onto the Bay Bridge. The atmosphere is fancy but not pretentious. The menu is amazing.
