Review: The Cliff House — Mother’s Day Brunch

May 21, 2014 by Angie Sommer 1 Comment

Mom likes a nice view and an elegant atmosphere. Cut to: The Cliff House Restaurant perched nicely atop a (wait for it) cliff on the very western reaches of San Francisco, overlooking the grand old Pacific. The beautifully renovated 1909 facility has been around since 1863, at least in name — two former incarnations succumbed to fire over the years (once even after surviving the 1906 earthquake — doh!).

News: Japanese Restaurant Provides Stuffed Animals for Solo Diners

May 12, 2014 by Angie Sommer 1 Comment

In response to a recent comment I made to a friend about eating dinner alone at a restaurant, she sent me an article about a Japanese cafe’s solution to this issue. At the Moomin Cafe, a giant, stuffed member of the Moomin family will happily accompany you for a coffee and a pastry.

Review: Beatrix — Chicago

May 10, 2014 by Angie Sommer 2 Comments

On the day I left, we only had time for a late breakfast/early lunch. It was to be our farewell meal to Chicago, and we had no plans. As we hemmed and hawed in the hotel room about where and what to eat, I found Beatrix on my Yelp app. It sounded good — casual American food, nice atmosphere, some sophisticated menu selections. We tried it. It was perfect.

Review: The Chicago Diner — Chicago

May 8, 2014 by Angie Sommer 4 Comments

Next up in my series of Chicago eats is the Chicago Diner. Jon found this place for me; it’s a vegetarian restaurant all decked out like a 50’s diner serving all the good old-fashioned favorites, sans the meat. They’ve got it all: burgers, fries, sandwiches, Philly cheese steaks, meatloaf, and milkshakes, all with no meat products (and often completely vegan).

Review: Table 52 — Chicago

May 6, 2014 by Angie Sommer 1 Comment

This week I will be posting about my recent trip to Chicago where I enjoyed some really amazing food. The trip was only four days long, but my friend Jon and I did a bit of research beforehand to ensure we hit up some of Chicago’s best, though we were not opting to pay top dollar this time. And though the current title holder of Best Restaurant in America (also ranked 7th in the world), Alinea, was within our grasp physically, we weren’t feeling quite up to the challenge of pursuing a reservation ticket this time around.

Recipe: My Boyfriend Taught Me to Make Salad Dressing

May 4, 2014 by Angie Sommer 1 Comment

Who knew cooking could be for regular mortals? Fine, I won’t pretend that making salad dressing is “cooking”. But still, I feel like Nigella Lawson up in here.

People hear I have a food blog and always say something along the lines of, “OMG, what’s your favorite thing to cook*?!” And I’m like, “toast!”

And for the past ten years (literally) I have stockpiled the Balsamic Vinaigrette salad dressing from Trader Joe’s since I love it so well and never ever seem to get sick of it on the myriad of salads I have jouously consumed over said decade. This salad dressing enables me to make an entire dinner (composed of a salad) in approximately five minutes, which is my general threshold for patience when making food for myself. And so, loyal salad dressing, I have enjoyed you for many moons.

Review: Comstock Saloon

April 16, 2014 by Angie Sommer 4 Comments

Comstock Saloon is a nice bar and restaurant on Columbus that’s kinda got a classy, old-timey feel to it. As in, it’s gussied up like an old fashioned saloon but with new, nice, and artistic fixtures. Dark wood bar, tables, and booths; dim chandeliers and lamps; bartenders who wear vests… you get the idea. Fine, I guess it’s kinda a hipster thing, but it’s cool and classy and fun and I like it. (Per their website, the historic space was a saloon dating back to 1907 — points for authenticity!)

Products: Awesome Website — Mouth.com

April 5, 2014 by Angie Sommer Leave a Comment

I WANT THIS:

pickles every month

Yes, this is a pickle of the month club. And I want it almost as badly as I want it to cost less. They offer 3-, 6-, 9-, or 12-month subscriptions that calc out to $57 per month for delicious, gourmet, handmade pickles to be delivered to your house. That, imho, is outrageously expensive, but I guess they’re just that delicious, gourmet, and handmade. Oddly, the price per month does not decrease as you increase your subscription length — no bulk discount on pickles? Sad face.

News: Win This Restaurant

April 2, 2014 by Angie Sommer 1 Comment

Ever win a contest? How about a restaurant? Me neither. But someone will do both when the owners of Pace Food + Drink in Santa Barbara give away their restaurant to their favorite entrant on June 1, 2014. I thought this was a strange choice for what to do with a successful restaurant you no longer want to own, but it certainly is intriguing.
